Background
I've always struggled to keep up with the prescribed schedule for taking vitamins and medication. I would like to take a deeper look at how we can better track vitamin and medication intake, and provide more effective reminders.
Also, how can we make the experience rewarding and fun?
ORIGINAL PROBLEM STATEMENT
People need help on tracking vitamins/medicine intake
in a more fun and engaging way
At the beginning of this project, it wasn't specifically about birth control pills. I wanted to help people like me who take vitamins and supplements every day by reminding them to take them regularly.
Based on my experience with other tracking apps, I found them unnecessarily cumbersome and time-consuming when logging data. I wanted to create a solution that makes these features more engaging and enjoyable to use.
ISSUES WITH EXISTING TOOLS
PILL ORGANIZER
People may forget to take pills, need reminders to remember
PILL REMINDER APP
Existing apps are hard to log in data
PHONE ALARM / REMINDER
Would be nice to have something more fun than a simple reminder
User Survey &
Affinity Mapping
I wanted to understand people's experience taking vitamins and pills so I sent out a google survey that was completed by 25 participants, and 4 participants were women who were on birth controls.
-
What medicine or vitamins do you take?
-
How often do you take them?
-
Are there special instructions on taking the medications or vitamins? i.e. 30 minutes after breakfast
-
Please describe your experience on taking medicine or vitamins.
-
Do you sometimes forget to take them? What do you do when you forget?
-
What methods do you use to keep track of taking medicine or vitamins?
-
Have you used any kind of tracking app or tools? (health tracker, fitness tracker, nutrition tracker etc) If so, how was your experience using it? What did you like about it / didn't like about it?
-
What was the purpose/goal of using the tracking app?
I took the survey results and did affinity mapping.

MAIN TAKEAWAYS
There were more pressure to the importance of not missing daily intake of medications compared to vitamins or supplements
People struggle to remember to take pills
same time everyday
People need help on tracking vitamins/medicine intake in a more fun and engaging way
Reminders should
not induce anxiety
I decided to focus on birth control pills instead of vitamins and other medications because of their importance in following the prescribed schedule and the pressure people experience when taking birth control pills,

Women who takes birth control pills feel pressure to make sure they adhere to the daily schedule.
FOCUSING ON

Birth Control Pills have to be taken every day, which leaves more room for human error

REVISED PROBLEM STATEMENT
People want to be reminded to take birth control pills in an easy and engaging way that also provides less disruptive notifications

"Given my busy lifestyle, It's hard to keep up with the birth control pill schedule"

For some individuals, the routine of watering a flower bed can bring structure to their day. This regular activity can create a sense of stability and order, contributing positively to mental health.
Nurturing flowers can symbolize nurturing our own body, so that is why I picked growing & blooming flowers as the final element.
Ideation
I sketched out low fidelity wireframes and different user interfaces that would be more engaging and fun when logging in the data.
I started with adding flowers each day to a vase in 7 day cycles. And after few more sketches, I came up with the concept of growing a flower plant.

Growing Flowers
growing flower interface adds joy to the tracking experience, giving a reward by seeing the flowers bloom and grow to a full flower tree as you take the pill in 7 day cycles.
